Freedom of Information
The Dams Safety Committee as a NSW government statutory authority uses the Department of Water and Energy (DWE) for certain services. Freedom of Information queries fall under them. For any information please contact the DWE Freedom of Information coordinator.
In New South Wales, the Freedom of Information Act 1989 gives you the right to:
- obtain access to information held as records by NSW Government Agencies, a Government Minister, local government and other public bodies;
- request amendments to records of a personal nature that are inaccurate;
- appeal against a decision not to grant access to information or to amend personal records.
Under the Freedom of Information Act, NSW Government Agencies are required to make information available wherever possible. You may be denied right of access to information only where, for example, there is a legitimate need for confidentiality or where another person's privacy may be invaded.

How to make a Freedom of Information request?
Identify the information or document that you would like to see.
Submit your request on a Freedom of Information application form (PDF) and send it to the FOI Coordinator.
Provide as much information as possible about the document you wish to see, such as file reference numbers if you have them.
Enclose the $30 fee with your application. Note: rebates of 50 per cent may be available on fees and charges. Those who may be eligible for a rebate include:
- pensioners with the Health Benefit Card;
- applicants on a low income (equivalent to a pension) and who are under financial hardship;
- where public interest can be demonstrated;
- children.
The Department of Water and Energy will deal with your request as soon as possible within the statutory timeframe.
