Privacy Statement

This website is provided and maintained by the Dams Safety Committee (DSC). This Privacy Statement applies to all the publicly accessible pages on the site based at www.damsafety.nsw.gov.au/.

NSW Dams Safety Committee privacy practices are regulated by the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1988 (NSW).

The Dams Safety Committee does not have any responsibility for the privacy policies or practices of third party sites linked to the DSC site.

All of the material published electronically on this site is for information purposes only. The Dams Safety Committee does not guarantee that the information is complete or correct. Unless otherwise stated the authorised version of all reports, guides and other information, should be obtained from official printed versions or the agency directly.

Information we collect

We do not record any personally identifiable information.

When you visit the DSC website, our server logs the following information:

  • the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the machine which has accessed it;
  • your top level domain name (for example .com, .gov, .au, .uk etc);
  • the address of your server;
  • the address of the pages accessed and the documents downloaded;
  • the date and time of your visit;
  • the previous site visited, including search terms used to navigate to this site; and
  • the type of browser and operating system you are using;

How do we use the information collected?

This information is only used to identify patterns of use of the site. It will help us to improve our sites and the services we offer. The Dams Safety Committee will not disclose outside the agency or publish information that identifies individual machines, or potentially identifies sub-grouping of machine- or server addresses, without consent, or otherwise in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1988 (NSW).

Electronic mail addresses

Your email address is only recorded if you send us a message. It will only be used for the purpose for which you provide it. In particular, we will not add it to a mailing list unless requested that this be done or disclose it without your consent.

Subscriptions

Some pages of this internet site provide the facility for users to subscribe to email mailing lists. To subscribe to these services users need to provide a valid email address. These email addresses will only be used for the purpose for which you have provided them. Email mailing list addresses are stored on a separate server and can only be accessed by authorised staff of the Dams Safety Committee.

Searches

Search terms you enter when using our search engine are collected. We only use these search terms to ascertain what people are looking for at our site, and to improve the service that we provide.

Links to other sites

Although every care is taken to provide links to suitable material from this site, the nature of the Internet prevents us from guaranteeing the suitability, completeness or accuracy of any of the material that this site may be linked to. Consequently, the Dams Safety Committee can accept no responsibility for unsuitable or inaccurate material that may be encountered.

When will information be disclosed and to whom?

The Dams Safety Committee will disclose the recorded information to relevant authorities in the following circumstances:

  • unauthorised attempts to access files which are not published on DSC pages;
  • unauthorised tampering or interference with files published on the DSC site;
  • unauthorised attempts to index the contents of the DSC site by other sites;
  • attempts to intercept messages of other users of the DSC site;
  • communications which are defamatory, abusive, vilify individuals or groups or which give rise to a suspicion that an offence is being committed; and
  • attempts to otherwise compromise the security of the web server, breach the laws of the State of New South Wales or Commonwealth of Australia, or interfere with the enjoyment of the DSC site by other users.

The DSC reserves the right to make disclosure to relevant authorities where the use of this site raises a suspicion that an offence is being, or has been, committed.

In the event of an investigation, the DSC will provide access to data to any law enforcement agency that may exercise a warrant to inspect our logs.

Who else can access this information?

Access to the raw data is restricted to a limited number of officers in the DSC to analyse and report on the success of the site in meeting the DSC's communication and access objectives. If you would like to access information held about you by DSC please contact us under privacy@damsafety.nsw.gov.au

Will this statement be updated over time?

Due to the developing nature of privacy principles for online communication, this policy may be modified or expanded in light of new developments or issues that may arise from time to time. The amended policy will be posted to this site and will operate from the time it is posted.
